Our footballers had plenty to shout about on a half-term tour to Barcelona.
Messi, Neymar and Suarez would have enjoyed the raucous rendition of ‘My garden shed is bigger than this’ as the Year 8s and Year 10s sang at the top of their voices in the Nou Camp, Barcelona’s world famous football stadium.
This was just one of the many highlights on our recent six-day tour to play football in Platja D’Aro near Barcelona. At the end of a 28-hour coach journey we finally arrived at our 4-star hotel where we put on our new training kits and tracksuits for the first of our training sessions. The 3G football pitches suited our flowing football and the coaching by Atkinson, Hall, Berry, Wilson and Newby was high tempo and top quality even in the Spanish heat.
Both year groups played two games each; the standard of football was high and the Spanish opposition was strong. We were very unlucky not to win all four games with some excellent individual and team performances. Every pupil on the tour played their part and their achievements were recognised at the awards ceremony in the hotel on the last night of the tour.
We made lots of friends during the week with our Spanish opposition and fans and at the end of one game both our teams were applauded off the pitch and were given a standing ovation by the local crowd, who were impressed by our quality football, team spirit and singing!
However, it wasn´t all football as the teachers organised a UV bowling night, pizza evening and a tour of the Barcelona stadium and museum, although prices in the shop were a rip-off! We visited the Olympic park which hosted the 1992 Olympics and did our final shopping for souvenirs on Las Ramblas, where the football shirts were much cheaper but not quite as authentic!!
On behalf of all the lads I would like to thank Mr Atkinson for organising this fantastic tour and to Mr Hall, Mr Berry, Mr Wilson and Mr Newby for taking 40 young footballers abroad during their holidays. ¡Muchas Gracias! for all the fun, laughter and quality banter!
Matt Keogh, Year 10
