Battle of the Books at KJS

Having won the Battle of the Books literature competition 2013, King James´s School had the honour of hosting and organising this year´s event.

Which book by Sally Gardner won the 2013 Carnegie Medal? What is the name of the group of comic book superheroes consisting of Human Torch, Thing, Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman? Find the authors in these anagrams - irk or rancid/Blackmailer moan?**

These were some of the questions and challenges tackled by teams of Year 9 and 10 students from 11 secondary schools in the Harrogate, Ripon and Leeds area. King James´s team was made up of captain Rowena Lloyd, Charlotte Robson, Kane Jones and Daisy Ella.

Celebrated children´s author and libraries campaigner, Alan Gibbons, was the quizmaster for the evening and delighted an invited audience of parents, teachers, students, KJS governors, librarians and Year 6 pupils from King James´s primary partners.

The winning team from Ripon Grammar School was awarded the Michael Rosen Trophy plus £200 for its school library and tokens for individual team members. The junior school trophy went to Scotton Lingerfield Primary School for its enthusiastic involvement in the competition.

Lisa Bryden, Librarian at King James´s School, said: "Battle of the Books is now in its sixth year and it offers a wonderful opportunity for schools to come together to celebrate literature. Students´ knowledge of books never ceases to amaze me and this year was no exception. I´d like to thank all schools for supporting the event."
