King James' School

Inspirational children´s choir

King James´s was very proud to host the world famous African Children´s Choir for one night only on their US and European tour in November, which was a real coup for the town of Knaresborough and the school. The main hall was packed to the rafters to see a choir who had previously performed for the Queen, at the Proms, on Blue Peter and at the White House.

The choir, made up of African children aged 7 to 10, performed well-loved children´s songs, hand clapping, traditional spirituals and contemporary tunes, accompanied by ethnic instruments. The children´s performance moved and inspired the audience, young and old alike. Organising the concert was a joint community project between King James´s and Gracious Street Church, who hosted the choir members during their visit.

The aim of the concert was to raise awareness of the needs of destitute and orphaned children in Africa and to raise funds for the children´s education programme. The total raised on the night was an incredible £1933. A big thank you must go to all who gave so generously to such a worthy cause and to the team of sixth formers who helped the event run so smoothly.  After their concert tour, the children will return home to continue their education, to equip them to build a better future for themselves and their communities. But they definitely left a little of themselves, their dignity, warmth and inspiration in the town of Knaresborough and reminded us all of what is important in life as we approach Christmas.
