KJS hosts Kids Lit Quiz

KJS was proud to be this year’s host of the International Kids’ Lit Quiz Yorkshire heat, involving 25 teams from around the area.

The competition is held annually for students in Years 6-8. Heats are held in New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, China, Singapore and Hong Kong, as well as the UK.  Teams of four students are asked to answer 100 questions on children´s literature divided into ten categories, which vary each year.

The quiz was hosted by Wayne Mills, the quizmaster from New Zealand, who proved to be vibrant and entertaining. Yorkshire author Martyn Bedford was a special guest for the afternoon, signing copies of his debut novel Flip and Never Ending, which has recently been nominated for the 2015 CILIP Carnegie Medal.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Knaresborough, Tony and Lori Handley, presented the teams with their certificates and book vouchers. First place went to an all-boys team from Ermysted Grammar School. In second place was Harrogate Grammar School and in third place was St Aidan´s C of E High School.

KJS Librarian Lisa Bryden said: “At King James’s we place great emphasis on reading for pleasure throughout the school. It was a huge privilege for us to host this important event and to witness the excitement surrounding books, reading and libraries. We look forward to welcoming more schools to next year’s event.”
