Key Stage 4 Curriculum

As a large school, we are proud of the range of subjects we offer in Years 10 and 11. For full details of the courses, please refer to the Key Stage 4 Options Booklet 2018-20 at the bottom of the page.

Below you can see an extract from the 2018-20 Options Booklet that summarises the range of options on offer and how students make up their 9 Key Stage 4 subjects:

English 9 hours per fortnight 2 GCSEs graded 9-1 (9 being the best) in English language and English literature
Maths 8 hours per fortnight 1 GCSE graded 9-1
Science 9 hours per fortnight 2 GCSEs graded 9-1. All 3 sciences are studied (biology, chemistry and physics)
Core PE 3 hours per fortnight This is a non-examined course focusing on students being active participants in sport although some students will complete sports leadership awards
PSHCEE 1 hour per fortnight This is a non-examined course in personal, social, health, citizenship and economic education

 

CORE OPTIONS

Students will then follow one of the three guided pathways. All pathways are designed to facilitate a broad and balanced curriculum.
The green pathway is our Ebacc pathway. Students who follow this must choose two core options either history or geography (1st core option) and then a modern foreign language (2nd core option)
The blue pathway is our flexible academic pathway. Students who follow this will choose one core option.
The orange pathway is our individual support pathway. Students who are suited to follow this choose one core option from a slightly reduced list.

French 5 hours per fortnight 1 GCSE graded 9-1
German 5 hours per fortnight 1 GCSE graded 9-1
Spanish 5 hours per fortnight 1 GCSE graded 9-1

*Triple science adds 5 hours to the 9 hours already allocated in ‘The Core’; these students therefore have a total of 14 hours of science per fortnight

 

EXTENDED OPTIONS

We have a range of subjects that students can study in KS4 at King James´s School to complete their options. Students who follow the Ebacc (green) pathway will choose two more subjects; students who choose the flexible (blue) pathway will choose three more subjects and students on the individual (orange) pathway will be guided towards one, two or three depending on need. 
This list includes the subjects from the core options section above for those who wish to study more than one of these subjects. Subjects marked * are BTECs, +are Technical/Vocational Awards graded from pass to distinction* and all of the others are full course GCSEs graded 9-1.
