Admission from Primary School
In September 2024, students starting in King James’s Year 7 came from a total of 46 primary schools! In view of the large number of schools sending students to King James’s, Mr T King, liaises between the Local Authority, the primary schools, parents and students to ensure that the procedures for application run smoothly.
Students in their final year of primary school and their parents are invited to visit the school on our Open Evening, which is held each year in early October. This provides an opportunity to get a feel for the school, meet staff and the Head, and visit departments.
Parents who would also like to view the school during a working day are most welcome to do so. To make an appointment, please contact Mr T King, Associate Assistant Head, at school.
Preference forms for applying to secondary school are sent out in October via primary schools. The preference forms are returned to the School Admissions Team.
Parents who are considering moving into the area and have a child due to transfer to secondary school should contact the School Admissions Team as well as the school.
Parents of children who live outside the area may also apply for admission to King James’s School. These applications will be considered after all in-area applications have been allocated.
Admission to Year 8 and Above
The School Admissions Team is responsible for admissions to Year 8 and above.
Applications should be submitted first to North Yorkshire County, who will contact the school to enquire about availability in the applicant’s Year Group. If there is availability and you would like to arrange a visit to the school prior to an application being made, please contact the school to arrange this with Mrs G Kingston.

Oversubscription
If a school is over-subscribed, the School Admissions Team allocates places according to published criteria. Parents should refer to the booklet issued by the School Admission Team for more information.
Please note that King James’s School is consistently over-subscribed each year by first preference applications.
Parents whose children are refused a place at their first choice school by the School Admission Team may appeal against the decision. A form for this purpose is available from the School Admissions Team.
