Studying in the Sixth Form

King James´s flexible, wide-ranging post-16 curriculum has been developed to meet different students´ needs as they move into Sixth Form.

The range of qualifications offered is a mixture of traditional academic and vocational courses: A levels, Applied, BTEC and Cambridge Technical qualifications. This wealth of choices allows students to follow a curriculum tailored specifically for them – a key factor in the Sixth Form’s continued high levels of achievement.

King James´s is an open access Sixth Form. The basic entry requirements are:

Level 2 qualifications (equivalent to five GCSEs at grade 4 and above including English and maths)

Studying in the Sixth Form provides new challenges to students; both academic and personal. King James´s possesses outstanding care, support and guidance and has an excellent track record in supporting students to achieve their potential in their studies and beyond. Students need to look objectively at the amount of time they have available and allocate it in a sensible and mature way to study, social life and commitments such as part-time work. The school alerts students if it considers that the balance is wrong.

Students meet with their Form Tutors every morning to ensure that there is regular monitoring of academic progress, welfare and attendance. During these sessions students will be involved in a range of activities from group challenges to academic target setting to student voice. The relationship built with the Form Tutor is vital as it allows support and challenge to be effective and guidance post-18 to be specific.

Using study periods effectively can be one of the greatest challenges for a new Sixth Former. To help students make the most of their study periods, there is a dedicated silent study area in the Sixth Form Centre equipped with computers and staffed all day. In addition, students have supervised study periods identified on their timetable, during which they attend and complete academic work of their choosing with the benefit of staff being present to offer advice as appropriate.
